07:25 AM Tom_L: morning
10:08 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> good morning....
10:18 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> crimminy,,,,,,,,,, Amazon is all fracked up....
10:18 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> have a new bike chain showing up today.... i hope
10:31 AM xxcoder: yep failed to wake up montiors
10:31 AM xxcoder: thats why I had disabled displays power off
10:32 AM xxcoder: bahh it was opening channels so it switched to this channel lol
10:33 AM JT-Shop: pretty close to lunch time here... I'll wait till after the nap to noddle
10:34 AM JT-Shop: or noodle even
10:35 AM Tom_L: you may noddle when you nap
10:50 AM JT-Shop: getting close to that now
11:03 AM JT-Cave: well the cleaning people are here so no nap till they leave
11:03 AM xxcoder: aww hope those napblockers leave soon
11:55 AM JT-Cave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf7LuaLDnWU
11:58 AM xxcoder: nice
12:34 PM Tom_L: glad you got the size worked out
12:36 PM Tom_L: haven't had a chance to test it yet
12:38 PM JT-Cave: just plugged the rpi5 in and I dislike that desktop xfce or something
12:38 PM JT-Cave: latency looks really good
12:39 PM JT-Cave: I'll have to see what it does with a mesa board
12:39 PM JT-Cave: but it's nap time now
12:40 PM JT-Cave: I think the hal led labels are more useful than the hal led
12:40 PM JT-Cave: unless you need a large led...
12:40 PM Tom_L: possibly
03:18 PM Tom_L: i didn't realize there was a difference
03:18 PM Tom_L: don't both use a Qlabel?
03:25 PM JT-Shop: yes they both use a QLabel, a hal label led you get a small led and room for text a hal led the led is centered
03:28 PM Tom_L: is there docs for both? i was trying to find both and differences
03:29 PM JT-Shop: docs soon
03:29 PM Tom_L: ok, no rush i was just sitting here messin
03:32 PM Tom_L: then there's the 'special' buttons with leds
03:33 PM Tom_L: so basically 3 types
03:56 PM JT-Shop: two hal led types and one special led button type
04:16 PM Tom_L: just signed off on the roof
04:17 PM Tom_L: one more down 2 dozen to go
04:20 PM JT-Cave: pull and look at examples/test/led.ui
04:20 PM Tom_L: i was looking in test earlier but didn't see that
04:21 PM JT-Shop: just pushed
04:22 PM JT-Shop: look at the dynamic properties of the flood label
04:22 PM Tom_L: building on the rpi
04:23 PM Tom_L: PR #376
04:23 PM Tom_L: looking...
04:23 PM JT-Shop: ok
04:25 PM Tom_L: i get a linuxcnc version warning
04:25 PM JT-Shop: from?
04:26 PM Tom_L: what's that screen grabber called?
04:26 PM Tom_L: i need to install it on the pi so i can show you
04:27 PM JT-Shop: oh you're on the pi... interesting
04:27 PM Tom_L: :)
04:27 PM Tom_L: i can switch if i need to
04:27 PM JT-Shop: I don't know what the name of the screen shot tool is and the help is no help
04:28 PM JT-Shop: try scrot
04:28 PM JT-Shop: or PrtScn
04:29 PM Tom_L: it's a warning about axis joint sections in the ini
04:29 PM Tom_L: asks to convert.. yes... it quits
04:29 PM JT-Shop: that's Andy's script
04:29 PM Tom_L: asks to convert.. no... it quits
04:29 PM Tom_L: i'll reboot on the other one
04:30 PM JT-Shop: what version does the ini have
04:31 PM Tom_L: i dunno, it's your test led thing
04:31 PM Tom_L: i'm rebooting... i just haven't had a chance to get all the goodies installed yet
04:35 PM Tom_L: does the checkbox for flood run an mdi command too?
04:35 PM Tom_L: it ran with no issues on the amd64
04:35 PM JT-Shop: no, it's just a hal checkbox, look in the post gui hal file for the connections
04:36 PM Tom_L: ok
04:37 PM Tom_L: you could tie it in there though couldn't you?
04:37 PM JT-Shop: where?
04:37 PM Tom_L: use the same signal for a hal command
04:37 PM Tom_L: in the postgui
04:38 PM Tom_L: that might not work as i envision it
04:38 PM JT-Shop: hal doesn't have commands but halui mdi commands can be linked in postgui
04:40 PM Tom_L: that's what i was thinking of
04:40 PM Tom_L: i think ;)
04:40 PM Tom_L: got so many options it's getting hard to keep track of them all now
04:40 PM JT-Shop: yeah the hal checkbox or pushbutton could execute a mdi command but it seems a round about way
04:40 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't but it would be possible
04:41 PM Tom_L: wonder why the rpi is complaining about the ini
04:41 PM JT-Shop: to me it makes more sense to use a mdi button
04:41 PM Tom_L: probably so yes
04:42 PM Tom_L: that screenshot thing is a mate util
04:44 PM JT-Shop: oh and the on/off button is a tiny bit long
04:48 PM Tom_rpi5: https://paste.debian.net/1401867/
04:48 PM Tom_rpi5: that's what i get now
04:49 PM Tom_rpi5: my other sims work ok
04:50 PM Tom_rpi5: lemme make sure i installed the update
04:51 PM Tom_rpi5: yeah it's up to date
04:59 PM Tom_rpi5: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/ui_error.png
04:59 PM Tom_rpi5: i get that trying to open it
05:00 PM JT-Shop: never seen that before
05:00 PM JT-Shop: are you trying to edit the ui file?
05:00 PM Tom_rpi5: was just trying to open it
05:00 PM Tom_rpi5: it's blank inside
05:00 PM JT-Shop: open?
05:00 PM Tom_rpi5: # This config file was created 2025-10-20 16:30:22.987993 by the update_ini script
05:00 PM Tom_rpi5: # The original config files may be found in the /home/cnc/flexgui/examples/test/led.old.old.old directory
05:00 PM Tom_rpi5: led.ui full content
05:01 PM Tom_rpi5: odd
05:01 PM JT-Shop: what is the version of designer
05:01 PM Tom_rpi5: should be 5
05:02 PM Tom_rpi5: 5.15.8
05:02 PM JT-Shop: https://pasteboard.co/J3USq8ZkJnxF.png
05:02 PM Tom_rpi5: well it says it uses that qt version
05:03 PM Tom_rpi5: same version, different splash screen
05:03 PM JT-Shop: create a blank main window and save it then open with a text editor to see what the difference is
05:03 PM Tom_rpi5: same.. i pushed the wrong 'about' one
05:05 PM Tom_rpi5: like it should be
05:05 PM Tom_rpi5: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
05:05 PM Tom_rpi5: <ui version="4.0">
05:05 PM Tom_rpi5: <class>Dialog</class>
05:05 PM Tom_rpi5: etc
05:05 PM Tom_rpi5: i'll pull and reubild it
05:06 PM JT-Shop: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
05:06 PM JT-Shop: <ui version="4.0">
05:06 PM JT-Shop: <class>MainWindow</class>
05:06 PM JT-Shop: <widget class="QMainWindow" name="MainWindow">
05:06 PM JT-Shop: that's led.ui
05:09 PM Tom_rpi5: that's better
05:09 PM Tom_rpi5: no clue what happened
05:09 PM JT-Shop: me neither
05:09 PM Tom_rpi5: and it ran fine that time
05:10 PM Tom_rpi5: you must save runs of it
05:11 PM JT-Shop: it?
05:11 PM Tom_rpi5: i see led.old led.old.old etc folders
05:11 PM JT-Shop: not me
05:11 PM JT-Shop: Andy did that
05:11 PM Tom_rpi5: that must have been associated with those errors
05:12 PM JT-Shop: https://github.com/jethornton/flexgui/tree/master/examples/test
05:12 PM Tom_rpi5: ok hazmat cleanup comlete
05:16 PM JT-Shop: cleanup from the roof job?
05:17 PM Tom_L: heh, no andy's spill
05:17 PM JT-Shop: LOL
05:17 PM Tom_L: naw, they did a nice job
05:18 PM JT-Shop: I need a new roof on the house... going with steel I think
05:20 PM Tom_L: we were getting bids before the hail to do it anyway
05:20 PM Tom_L: but i got it basically free
05:20 PM JT-Shop: nice
05:20 PM Tom_L: did a $500 upgrade to class 4
05:20 PM Tom_L: better ins discounts
05:21 PM Tom_L: is metal noisier?
05:21 PM Tom_L: i haven't seen any that i know of around here
05:21 PM JT-Shop: well it is if there is nothing between the metal and you
05:22 PM Tom_L: right, my bud had steel buildings
05:22 PM JT-Shop: but with all the wood, insulation and distance no
05:23 PM JT-Shop: my big shop has a metal roof and it's quiet because I have insulation in the roof
05:23 PM JT-Shop: in a rain storm you can here it hit the lean to which has no insulation
05:24 PM JT-Shop: the house has 15" of insulation in the attic
05:25 PM Tom_L: recents works on the pi now too
05:25 PM JT-Shop: cool
05:26 PM Tom_L: i'm gonna get a touch screen once things settle down here a bit
05:26 PM Tom_L: with the rpi5 the old monitor in the shop doesn't work
05:26 PM Tom_L: says the resolution is too low
05:26 PM Tom_L: amd64 works fine
05:26 PM Tom_L: rpi4 worked fine
05:26 PM JT-Shop: touch screens are interesting
05:27 PM Tom_L: may keep it inside here just to make gui.. not sure yet
05:28 PM Tom_L: i got 4 monitors and still have to switch one for the rpi5
05:28 PM JT-Shop: I found my 15" for the rpi
05:28 PM Tom_L: that one you linked a while back was out of stock
05:31 PM Tom_L: gnome-screenshot worked btw
05:31 PM JT-Shop: on the rpi5?
05:31 PM Tom_L: yes
05:32 PM Tom_L: i couldn't find the file right away until i realized i had it mapped right to the server
05:43 PM * JT-Shop calls it a night
07:58 PM lcnc-relay: <awaje@> Does anybody have recommendations for starter hardware? It doesn’t have to be too functional. I’m probably going to use an old ender 3 and I don’t expect to be able to use it. I just want to see something move and be able to play around with it.
08:00 PM lcnc-relay: <awaje@> * changed username to "awaje"
09:10 PM Tom_L: doubt you'll be able to run linuxcnc on it
09:10 PM Tom_L: maybe grbl
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <awaje@> I more meant using it as the steppers and physical motion system
10:35 PM lcnc-relay: <awaje@> Like I’d have a separate computer (probably a pi) running linuxcnc
10:36 PM lcnc-relay: <awaje@> I did have some fun messing around with the melzi (8-bit default control) board and controlling the motors with that though
