04:48 AM Tom_L: morning
05:08 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:23 AM JT-Cave: looks like rain here today and it's 75°F already
07:17 AM rdtsc-w: my only gripe about the bridge is that you can't /ignore a discord user.
07:22 AM JT-Cave: and another gripe is you never know who is watching
07:25 AM rdtsc-w: once, months ago, youtube creator WatchWesWork popped in the channel from Discord, that was the welcome kind of random drop-in
07:31 AM JT-Cave: https://ibb.co/s9mSG9yM
07:31 AM JT-Cave: just testing a check for importing psutil
07:32 AM JT-Cave: I misspelled it to test on this pc
07:33 AM rdtsc-w: nice, this the try / import / except trick? :)
07:34 AM JT-Cave: yup
07:38 AM * JT-Cave starts his day
07:41 AM Tom_rpi5: using dtoverlay=spi0-1cs,cs0_pin=24
07:41 AM Tom_rpi5: i get
07:41 AM Tom_rpi5: Unexpected cookie at 0100..0110:
07:41 AM Tom_rpi5: ffffffff ffffffff ffffffff
07:41 AM Tom_rpi5: No 7I90HD board found
07:46 AM Tom_L: rdtsc-w, was some invisible trying to help on the far side of the bridge?
08:05 AM Tom_L: rdtsc-w, when you use dtoverlay in the config for pins, does xxx_pin=24 specify the physical pin or GPIO pin?
08:13 AM Tom_L: well, changing to the GPIO pin didn't matter.. still get no board found
08:41 AM Tom_L: lost a couple branches last night
08:47 AM rdtsc-w: didn't have to mess with dtoverlay ... might be time to break out the Saleae
08:47 AM rdtsc-w: I got the same message with the wrong OEM firmware on the mesa card
08:48 AM rdtsc-w: but you need to know if there is actual data or not
08:51 AM rdtsc-w: looks like there may be a spi-config in debian: https://manpages.debian.org/testing/spi-tools/spi-config.1.en.html
10:02 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> good morning...........
10:03 AM lcnc-relay: <roguish> JT, the weather is looking kinda nasty for you today.....
10:37 AM Tom_L: rdtsc-w, i'll check on that utility
10:38 AM Tom_L: mesaflash should take care of the modes though
10:38 AM Tom_L: that or his hm2 driver
10:38 AM Tom_L: depending where you're at
01:53 PM JT-Shop: hoe battery is between 25% and 50% after being on the charger all night... might be time for a new one
02:05 PM rdtsc-w: batteries increased in cost since 'rona
02:46 PM JT-Shop: $210 for a 4D battery
02:48 PM xxcoder: very cheap for 4 dimensional battery
02:48 PM xxcoder: most batteries that go bad, usually have problem with cell or two inside it
02:59 PM JT-Shop: originally it came with two 3ET batteries in series
03:20 PM rdtsc-w: lots of sizes https://www.exidegroup.com/sites/default/files/2017-10/MKTG2029%20Exide_TradeSheets_Heavy_Duty-Commercial_4-17.pdf
03:24 PM JT-Shop: hmm must have been dual 3EH from the factory
03:25 PM JT-Shop: nice chart
04:25 PM JT-Shop: no wonder a 4D is a really tight fit it's a bit bigger than two 3EH batteries
05:04 PM * JT-Shop tries to figure out how to move the surface grinder over to the door
05:09 PM * Tom_L is pooped out after cleaning up all the branches
05:10 PM Tom_L: helped the neighbor and he offered to haul them to his farm and get rid of em
05:10 PM Tom_L: so then the other neighbor came over asking for help.....
05:10 PM JT-Shop: the bad weather passed us by and hit IL
05:10 PM Tom_L: broke the cord on my favorite saw so i had to fix that
05:11 PM Tom_L: stil 020 T
05:11 PM Tom_L: stihl
05:11 PM JT-Shop: starter cord?
05:11 PM Tom_L: yeah
05:11 PM Tom_L: my regular fix it place had some bulk
05:11 PM JT-Shop: that's that one hand limb saw?
05:12 PM Tom_L: that was one of the easiest cords to fix
05:12 PM Tom_L: yes
05:12 PM Tom_L: 10"
05:12 PM JT-Shop: I wish I had one sometimes but my 021 is almost as small
05:13 PM Tom_L: it broke right as i was starting to help the neighbor
05:13 PM Tom_L: i went back and got the loud ass mac and fired that relic up
05:13 PM Tom_L: still works like new
05:14 PM Tom_L: i think i have a 24" bar for it
05:14 PM JT-Shop: going to the dealer to see what's up with the C8
05:14 PM Tom_L: problems?
05:14 PM JT-Shop: the battery charger finally says it's fully charged
05:14 PM Tom_L: ahh not charging like it should
05:14 PM JT-Shop: dead battery yesterday
05:15 PM JT-Shop: something drained the battery in 4 days
05:15 PM Tom_L: it's not old enough to be a bad battery
05:15 PM JT-Shop: or it's bad
05:15 PM Tom_L: i start watching those a little closer around the 3yr mark
05:15 PM JT-Shop: it's still B2B so no problem
05:16 PM Tom_L: i think on that spi, the rpi os initialized it different than debian 12
05:17 PM Tom_L: i set it aside to clean this mess
05:17 PM Tom_L: when i did spi on the rpi4 it has the raspberry pi os
05:18 PM Tom_L: and i had no issues at all
05:18 PM JT-Shop: still fighting spi?
05:18 PM Tom_L: i haven't figured it out yet but haven't been that energetic with it
05:19 PM JT-Shop: I know that feeling
05:19 PM Tom_L: i'm sure there's a solution i just haven't crossed it
05:20 PM Tom_L: i'd make a new cable if i had some ends for it
05:20 PM Tom_L: but i'm not sure i do
05:20 PM JT-Shop: how many pins?
05:20 PM Tom_L: 4-6
05:20 PM Tom_L: i forget
05:20 PM JT-Shop: for the cable end?
05:20 PM Tom_L: miso, mosi, sck, cs, gnd
05:20 PM Tom_L: oh
05:20 PM JT-Shop: 26?
05:20 PM Tom_L: it plugs into the 7i90 pp
05:20 PM Tom_L: yes
05:21 PM Tom_L: and a 40 on the other end
05:21 PM Tom_L: for the pi
05:21 PM Tom_L: all that an only uses half dozen wires
05:21 PM JT-Shop: I like the break out boards for the pi that have screw terminals
05:21 PM Tom_L: i checked the cable with the meter coupld days ago and it's good
05:22 PM Tom_L: i haven't seen or looked for those
05:22 PM Tom_L: this cable has to be very short
05:22 PM Tom_L: like 1.5"
05:22 PM Tom_L: i could do up a board and solder the plugs to that
05:23 PM Tom_L: but i haven't done a board in several years and likely forgot how
05:23 PM JT-Shop: https://www.adafruit.com/product/5096
05:23 PM Tom_L: yeah that wouldn't work for this
05:24 PM Tom_L: iirc 50Mhz signals possible
05:25 PM Tom_L: i could do a board but i'd have to figure out the connector part numbers etc etc and i'm not sure i'm up for all that just for a test
05:25 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/spi_cable.jpg
05:26 PM Tom_L: i broke the clips on the 40 pin :)
05:26 PM Tom_L: i like the colored ribbon for stuff like this
05:27 PM JT-Shop: someone told me about the colored ribbon but I'm not buying any I still have a lot of 50 wire ribbon in gray
05:28 PM Tom_L: yeah i still have a box full of old connectors and various widths of ribbon
05:28 PM Tom_L: i had 2-3 spools of 10 cond ribbon
05:29 PM Tom_L: used most of that up on the programmers
05:56 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:04 PM lcnc-relay: <roguish> well, up to 93 now.... glad I rode earlier
06:19 PM rdtsc: well tinkering with rpi5 firmware, now mine doesn't boot... black screen
06:19 PM Tom_L: fun times
06:20 PM Tom_L: spent my spare time today cleaning up tree branches so i haven't revisited spi yet
06:21 PM Tom_L: i'll have to find where my saleae software is loaded and maybe take a peek
06:22 PM rdtsc: whoa... hit Ctrl-Alt-F1, typed in password (blind) and it seems to be responding to commands - zero display
06:22 PM Tom_L: can you ssh into it?
06:22 PM rdtsc: negative
06:24 PM Tom_L: i may dig thru my connector pile and see if i have some plugs and make a better cable although i don't think that's what the problem is
06:25 PM rdtsc: it could be... others with the far-too-long cables also got the same cookie message - or it could be the firmware, or wiring issue, etc... definitely need the saleae at this point
06:25 PM Tom_L: i beep tested the wiring and am sure it's ok
06:25 PM rdtsc: it was SUPPOSED to be easy, heh
06:25 PM Tom_L: i've used that cable on the rpi4 with spi
06:26 PM Tom_L: yeah wifi was too
06:26 PM Tom_L: at least now i know how to recover a bricked mesa card
06:27 PM rdtsc: my rpi5 wifi dongle is off, so the network driver is not loaded... guess I try Ethernet next
06:27 PM Tom_L: are you using networkmanager?
06:28 PM Tom_L: you should look at my install for that.. it's super easy to make connections
06:28 PM Tom_L: i set up a static ip the same way
06:28 PM rdtsc: don't think so... got some blinkenlights, so now to see what address it is
06:28 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/rpi5_wifi_steps.txt
06:29 PM Tom_L: if you ever decide to go that route
06:29 PM Tom_L: if you don't delete interfaces thought it won't work
06:31 PM rdtsc: yuck.... [ 783.025999] raspberrypi-firmware soc@107c000000:firmware: Request 0x00030087 returned status 0x00000000
06:31 PM rdtsc: times a million
06:31 PM Tom_L: were you trying to update it or something?
06:32 PM rdtsc: this was that firmware package I (two minutes later) said not to install - must have been
06:32 PM rdtsc: even though I removed it, it must have changed something
06:32 PM Tom_L: i'm not messin with mine :)
06:58 PM rdtsc: reapplied CURRENT: Wed Jan 22 12:16:51 AM UTC 2025 (1737505011), no affect
06:59 PM Tom_L: hmm
07:00 PM Tom_L: i wonder if there's a way to clear it and start from scratch without jtag or such
07:01 PM rdtsc: I can boot enough to SSH into it, but it isn't starting the WiFi dongle driver, nor display
07:01 PM Tom_L: what's the config look like?
07:03 PM rdtsc: oh wow... about 20 lines now
07:03 PM rdtsc: could you pastebin yours? :)
07:03 PM Tom_L: sure
07:03 PM Tom_L: gimme a bit to hook it up
07:04 PM rdtsc: sure, thanks
07:04 PM Tom_L: i'd just opened my saleae case to review... it's been too long
07:06 PM Tom_L: ahh i forgot i had a bag of those clip terminals
07:07 PM rdtsc: might come in handy real soon
07:08 PM Tom_L: i haven't set up a connection with my server yet
07:08 PM Tom_L: is there an easy way for that?
07:08 PM Tom_L: i just used to use the file brouser
07:08 PM Tom_L: i forgot how i did that
07:11 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:443/~webpage/cnc/Rpi5/
07:11 PM Tom_L: the only thing i've changed was the spi enable line
07:12 PM Tom_L: tell me if you see anything weird on mine
07:14 PM rdtsc: hmmm, think ##dtparam=spi=on needs to be dtparam=spi=on
07:14 PM Tom_L: not if you use the other lines
07:14 PM Tom_L: everywhere i read they said comment that out if you specify pins
07:14 PM Tom_L: i've tried both ways
07:15 PM Tom_L: that last one defining pin8 i think is wrong
07:15 PM Tom_L: unless those define GPIO
07:15 PM Tom_L: then it's right
07:21 PM rdtsc: my mesaflash test works, using dtparam=spi=on and dtoverlay=spi0-1cs,cs0_pin=8
07:22 PM rdtsc: sadly. still no boot, exactly the same
07:25 PM Tom_L: wonder what happened
07:26 PM Tom_L: so ^^ those parameters are good?
07:26 PM Tom_L: i'll uncomment the dtparam=spi=on
07:27 PM rdtsc: yeppers, that combination works for the SPI pins as shown in the 7c80 manual
07:27 PM Tom_L: i was reading about those a bit and if you have a list there's another dt command for the pin list
07:27 PM rdtsc: sad that I can totally communicate with the 7c80 board, but am unable to even boot the machine lol
07:28 PM Tom_L: that tells me my config is ok but missing some driver or such
07:28 PM Tom_L: dtparameter... that was it
07:28 PM Tom_L: example
07:28 PM Tom_L: dtparameter=cs0_pin=16,cs0_spidev=disable
07:29 PM Tom_L: below a dtoverlay line
07:29 PM rdtsc: firmware
07:29 PM Tom_L: my firmware?
07:29 PM Tom_L: i wonder if i can revert to what you have
07:30 PM Tom_L: i don't wanna end up with a black screen though :)
07:30 PM rdtsc: oh no sorry was trying to search history for where I said what package to never install
07:30 PM Tom_L: heh ok
07:31 PM rdtsc: whatver package I installed and then immediately said do NOT install it, that's the one to avoid heh
07:31 PM Tom_L: i haven't or don't really plan to install alot on it
07:31 PM Tom_L: just lcnc stuff and mesa stuff and of course flex
07:32 PM Tom_L: but i've already made one backup
07:32 PM rdtsc: I think what happened was, that firmware update package triggered a kernel rebuild... which borked things.
07:32 PM Tom_L: huh
07:33 PM Tom_L: i think i did a kernel once for the rpi4
07:33 PM rdtsc: this .xz has lots of special things done to the kernel, and anything that causes a kernel update, breaks stuff
07:34 PM Tom_L: oh the lcnc .xz?
07:34 PM rdtsc: yep, it is really touchy regarding the kernel
07:35 PM rdtsc: recently I borked it by accidentally doing an apt dist-upgrade... that pulled in some kind of kernel update, and it hosed it
07:35 PM Tom_L: i remember that
07:35 PM rdtsc: I synced my fork of flexgui on the rpi5... then I could rebuild it locally - worked really great for that
07:36 PM Tom_L: i need to remember what all i need to install
07:36 PM Tom_L: like buildessentials etc
07:37 PM rdtsc: so then put vscode on it, so I could run vscode on the host computer, and connect over SSH... twisted mess but worked great
07:37 PM * Tom_L puts the saleae back in it's nice little carry pouch for this evening
07:38 PM Tom_L: i need to figure out how i connected to my server now
07:38 PM Tom_L: i wonder if ssh is enabled
07:38 PM rdtsc: ditto; gonna have to reload this thing... luckily I can access it over SSH to backup the important bits
07:38 PM Tom_L: i had it all set up and did a bookmark for it
07:39 PM rdtsc: to check if ssh is installed systemctl status ssh.service
07:39 PM rdtsc: if not, sudo apt install ssh :)
07:40 PM Tom_L: seems active
07:40 PM rdtsc: can get the rpi's ip address with ip a
07:40 PM Tom_L: i shouldn't need that if i'm going from it to the server
07:42 PM Tom_L: ahh it hates me cause i'm 'cnc'
07:43 PM Tom_L: do i need to adduser cnc on the server?
07:43 PM rdtsc: think what I'm gonna do, it backup the entire /boot folder next time... then if anything borks, will have a backup!
07:43 PM Tom_L: heh
07:44 PM rdtsc: hmmm if trying to ssh from the rpi to the server's ip, the rpi should say something like "new computer, do you trust it?"
07:45 PM Tom_L: i have seen that before but not this time yet
07:45 PM Tom_L: i did get in as root though
07:52 PM Tom_L: mmm i think it was a network item on the mate menu. this is xfce... i don't like it
08:16 PM rdtsc: ok have some bad storms moving in, gonna power stuff down
08:18 PM Tom_L: have a good evening
08:19 PM xxcoder: have safe day/night
08:29 PM Tom_L: application cannot be run as root
08:29 PM Tom_L: user-> you do not have permission to make changes...
